HAND language

Series of six public murals.
May-June, 2004
Historical District of Sumter, SC

This series of murals was my first experience with public art. Not really sure how public art was supposed to function, I just assumed
that it had to communicate something to the public.

In my studio at the time, I was playing with sign language and practicing card tricks, so I decided that maybe I could use my hands to
have a weird conversation with the Sumter community. That conversation ended up being a very whimsical and humorous game that
really influenced my approach to future projects. Three of the murals were destroyed in a city demolition project almost a year later
while the other three still stand to this day.
